1. NULLARBOR WINS BEST ANIMATION AT THE SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL
Press Release from The Lampshade Collective

Short animated film "Nullarbor" by Melbourne's The Lampshade Collective
received the Yoram Gross Animation Award at the Sydney Film Festival
over the weekend. The award, which carries a $4,000 prize is recognized
by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and makes the film
Academy accredited. Last year's winner of the same prize "The Lost
Thing" by Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann, subsequently won the Academy
Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Nullarbor had its International premiere as part of the opening night
program at the Stuttgart Trickfilm International Festival of Animation
in Germany and recently screened as the only Australian short film in
official competition at the Annecy International Festival of Animation
in France. The short road movie, made with assistance from Film Victoria
and Screen Australia will also have its UK premiere at the Edinburgh
International Film Festival and US premiere at Palm Springs
International Shortfest this week before screening back home at both the
Melbourne International Film Festival and Revelation Perth International
Film Festivals.

The film's directors Alister Lockhart and Patrick Sarell are over the
moon that audiences are responding so well to the film. "We wanted to
make an animated film about Australian people that looks at the
foolishness and charm of our culture and our unique style of
miscommunication" says Sarell. Lockhart ads "It's a contemporary
adaptation of the old tortoise and hare story, set across Australia's
Nullarbor Plain."

Producer Katrina Mathers said the team couldn't be happier with the
attention the film is receiving after its short run of screenings so
far. "We've managed to pick up some sales and distribution after
screening at Annecy, so to receive an award as well is really amazing."

"It's been a long ride" they all say with a laugh.

The Lampshade Collective was formed in 2007 by Patrick Sarell, Katrina
Mathers and Daryl Munton, later joined by Merrin Jensen to produce
original entertaining, narrative CG animation. They have several new
projects in development.

Made in both 2D and 3D animation "5ters - Castle of the Darkmaster" is a about a journey undertaken by five children and traverses the real and the imaginary worlds.

'5Ters': 3D animation film by computer whizkids

"We wanted to make a film with computer graphics and animation on a scale never seen in India so far. And I can proudly say that with '5ters - Castle of the Darkmaster', we have successfully managed to do that," Venugopal said in a statement.

"This is an initiative towards making technologically superior films, which I feel, India is fully capable of. And I hope that with 5ters… setting the trend, more such films are attempted here," he added.

Vijayalakshmi NS is the writer, associate director and digital production head of the film.

With as many as 1,600 visual effects, the film is said to be a visual treat.

"Stunning visual locales, dazzling visual effects and path-breaking animation make 5ters… a visual treat for all," said Vijayalakshmi.

Pirates IV crosses $1 billion mark

Despite being by far the lowest grossing film in the franchise on the domestic front, strong international ticket sales have helped Disney’s Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides cross the $1 billion mark, making it only the eighth movie in film history to do so. Although it got a general “meh” from critics, the star power of Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and of course Johnny Depp was likely a key factor in the film’s almost shocking level of success. Apparently, Disney does have plans for a Pirates of the Carribean V, although the project hasn’t been officially greenlit yet.

Life goes easy for texture artist with New Render Heads latest UVAutoratio Pro V 2.5.0 version,

Artists in the film and games industry spend hours manually scaling the texture coordinates of models to get them in the right proportion. This plug-in completely automates this process but still leaves the artist in control.

To get the most out of textures they should be mapped in proportion to the size of the geometry. Not doing so means that different parts of the scene will have different texture distribution, resulting in some textures appearing blurrier than others while some will be overly sharp, making the scene appear inconsistent and strange. Those objects with too much texture mapped to them waste memory and cause aliasing (flickering) due to the overly high frequency of texels.

Artists in the game and film industry can spend hours scaling UVs up and down manually trying to get them to the ideal proportion. This isn't a particularly fun job, in fact it's not something we should be wasting our time with. Wouldn't it be great if this tiresome task was automated?

Enter UVAutoRatio Pro: the complete tool for automating all texel ratio tasks.

Key Features

  • Automatically scale UVs based on surface area
  • Fast and accurate processing algorithm
  • Ability to specify UV-set
  • Operates on UV shells

Hi, Do you know about Medical Animation..... if not..... go through below......

What is Medical Animation?

Medical animation is a movie of medical illustrations.

Medical animations are a means to represent complex medical concepts and applications to an audience of diverse backgrounds. By immersing the viewer in the ideas and implications of the animation content, they can better understand and retain a higher level of information.

What does medical animation provide that other media do not?

Whereas written language is a relatively new concept in Human history, the ability to recognize graphical and spatial data is something that is embedded in people's cerebral functions.

Hence, animations (or movies) provide a natural way of representing ideas, concepts, data and many forms of information that may otherwise be difficult to fully, or correctly, absorb.

How do we animate medical concepts and applications?

The first step in animating is to create a storyboard. A storyboard is a series of drawings that illustrates the main concepts to be represented in the animation. The main concepts are obtained by communication between client and the production house.

Once the storyboard is created, we then start modeling the scene objects that comprise the elements for the animation, such as anatomical objects. We then create the rough animation (animated objects, animated camera) and present that to the client for feedback. With modifications of the rough animation, we refine the animation and start creating the colors and textures to be used on the objects and within the scene. This is also approved by the client in key still shots from the animation. The animation is then rendered at low resolution and offered for feedback to the client. With final changes, we then render the final animation and deliver the product in the preferred client format(s).

What styles are available?

Styles represent the look of the animation. From 2D cartoon-style to photorealistic 3D style

How are medicine and entertainment integrated?

Medicine and entertainment are not commonly used together. However, we strive to reach a well-balanced hydrid animation that is medically / scientifically accurate and at the same time entertaining to the viewer. "Traditional" animations produced by medical or science professionals can be rough, choppy, confusing, or simply not professional-looking. This is due to a lack of training and/or knowledge in the arts and skills of animation.

There are few production houses giving their service to medical animation. It’s one of the fast growing segment in animation industry.

Ra.One: India's Iron Man
A sneak peek of India's biggest superhero/VFX movie.
Posted In | Site Categories: CG, Films, Visual Effects

Bollywood has its own superhero with an arsenal of VFX. Courtesy of redchillies.vfx.

Ra.One is the maiden feature by Bollywood superstar and producer Shah Rukh Khan (nicknamed SRK and King Khan) from his entertainment production company, redchillies.vfx. He began his career with the TV serial Fauzi and became an overnight heartthrob. His last film, My Name is Khan, was an international hit. SRK now wants to conquer the hearts of children, not by adorning a special suit -- the costliest worn to date by any hero onscreen in India -- but by providing a superhero to children. The intention is to shake up viewers across the world utilizing some of the latest CG advancements. Mamta Narang interviews Jeff Kleiser (who served as lead visual effects supervisor) along with the heads of redchillies.vfx: Harry Hingorani (production director and vfx supervisor) and Keitan Yadav (COO and vfx producer). Ra.One is slated to be released in October coinciding with the Diwali festival.
According to Keitan Yadav: this is the most expensive and one of a kind VFX movie done in India to date. The VFX budget is enormous like the budget of a big Bollywood blockbuster.
Sixty % of work in Ra.One is visual effects. There are 37 sequences and a majority of them are difficult and time consumingThe most challenging sequence is the suit of SRK, which is a combination of visual effects plus reality.
have spent a good deal of time developing the pipelines for the cubic transformations in the film. There are actually six or seven different algorithms required to facilitate all the on-screen action, and the development and testing of these pipelines has been the most challenging aspect of the show for me.
The scope and complexity of shots posed a new challenge.

According to the team, the uniqueness of Ra One is a Superhero is being offered to children, which has never been done in Indian cinema before and this global team.
Harry Hingorani (production director and vfx supervisor)   talks about the softwares used::  Houdini, Maya and 3ds Max. For composting, Nuke, Shake and Fusion. We have setup a few plug-ins to export the 800 suit Matchmation shots from Maya to Houdini to render everything procedurally, hence making the whole procedure automatic. In regards to compositing, we have used the same procedure using Nuke scripts.
